Overcoming Obstacles: Mindset Transformation Tuesday
Overcoming Obstacles: Landing Your Jab
Life Lesson Quote
A practice I recently learned is to set goals while overcoming obstacles that are the equivalent of hitting a single. Repeat daily and huge progress is made in only a few months. Sounds simple and obvious, however I know firsthand through my own struggles and those of coaching my students that we inevitably get patient and in the mindset of trying to hit home runs every time we go to the gym. This is compounded by the “Are You Really Sure?” phenomena I see everyone go through when trying to make meaningful growth.
Regardless of whether the goal is to create the body we desire, further a career, create a more satisfying home life, you name it, life aka THE UNIVERSE has a way of sending us obstacles we never see coming. I like to call these “UP’s,” short for Universe Punches. An illness, accident, any excuse to stop changing WILL ARISE 100% of the time! Accepting this decreases the likelihood of using obstacles as excuses. Rather as we know they will arise we are prepared and have the necessary tools to stay on track.
The mindset to practice is to view our goals as a sport, boxing is a clear example. If every day we are landing jabs on our ultimate goal we will get there as fast as possible. Yes this isn’t as sexy as a “hack” that promises you a one punch knockout, but if you’re honest with yourself I have no doubt you will see a long history of committing to a goal, landing a few power punches the first week or two, then continually flailing to no avail once the feeling the UP’s land!
Knowing this makes success more likely, the obstacles are still real and trying, our response can be entirely different. We choose and act, rather than being reactive to the UP’s. Planned, prepared and armed we dodge the UP or minimize the blow, then get back to work as best we can and land our jab for the day.
Inevitably the UP’s come in a flurry and we feel ourselves against the ropes. Such was the case this last week leading into today. A teething 18 month old struggling to sleep, more to-do’s going on than normal each day, the need to finish a New Year’s campaign, all on top of my personal goals to become more successful, vigorous, loving and wiser each day.
Today was a standing 8 count. I had zero desire to write this blog, zero desire to lift anything heavier than my sons, repeated thoughts to escape the discomfort through unhealthy pseudo-foods and caffeine after minimal sleep 2/3 nights. Through my daily practices though I stayed present enough to land my jabs. I got through an effective minimal workout, crossed off some necessary business tasks including this blog, and arguably most importantly stayed far more patient and loving with my family than I would have been only months ago.
The UP’s are on their way, what are you going to do about them?
